The business orientation course offered by Skills and Business for Africa (SABFA) in the Netherlands is
a great program designed for start-up entrepreneurs. I was privileged to be among the participants
to benefit from this organization, and it goes without saying that this was an enriching experience for
me.
Through this program, I was equipped with knowledge on how to come up with a business idea,
conduct some feasibility study of the business and device a plan that leads to the execution of the
business idea. The course was structured in a way that provided an opportunity for a one-on-one
type of mentorship which is very key to understanding the finer details of establishing a sustainable
business especially in the African context. This mentorship enabled me to gain more knowledge and
understanding of the type of business I would like to venture into and the steps needed to begin
operations. In addition, this also helped me to gain insights on different aspects of developing a
business such as the finance, market, business strategy, entrepreneur behavior and others. The
development of the website was also one of the highlights of this course. This website will assist me
to connect with many people across the globe; showcasing my business and eventually attracting
business investments and partnerships in the future.
Apart from this, the course also gave me an opportunity to get some exposure in the anticipated
business field. I was privileged to visit a female mushroom farmer in the Netherlands as well as
attend an event known as ‘The Mushroom Days’ in Den Bosch where many people in the mushroom
value chain converged to showcase their various products and roles played in the value chain. This
provided an opportunity for me to network, learn more about mushroom farming and meet people
of like mind.
To sum it up, the business orientation course was indeed highly beneficial to me as I gained
knowledge and insights that will be very useful when establishing and running my business. Much
appreciation to the entire program team for this ample opportunity.
